I remember thinking (and not for the last time) that the glamorous image of making movies was greatly overstated.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">This summer marks 30 years since the release of <em>Ghostbusters<\/em> and 25 years since the release of <em>Ghostbusters 2<\/em>.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">In 1988 I was part of a team brought to ILM (Lucasfilm\u2019s special effects company in Marin) to help create the creatures for <em>Ghostbusters 2<\/em>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Creature designer, Tim Lawrence was in charge of bringing together the artists, designers, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">and puppeteers that made up the<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> creature shop. I<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> supervised the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">fabrication\/costume shop<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">In my experience, creating and performing puppets for film is usually a team effort. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">For <em>Ghostbusters 2 <\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">we had a talented team to work with<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">One member of our team, sculptor William Forsche,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> who<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> supervised most of<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">the life-casting and body casting, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">kept a video journal of much of the process. Thanks to Bill, I have access to some great behind the scenes footage of the creative process. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Slimer is the only creature that was in both <em>Ghostbusters<\/em> and <em>Ghostbusters 2<\/em>. The producers saw that Slimer had a great appeal to children, and there were plans to do a spinoff, an animated series called <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The Real Ghostbusters<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Slimer went through some design changes from the first film to <em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">Ghostbusters 2<\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">. Slimer in\u00a0<em>Ghostbusters 2<\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> was redesigned to be more cartoonish. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8056\" style=\"width: 274px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lacquiparledesign.com\/pofa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/10508345_1435090810096392_1946995565_n3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8056\" class=\" wp-image-8056        \" style=\"width: 185px; height: 232px;\" title=\"Original designs by Henry Mayo for Ghostbusters 2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lacquiparledesign.com\/pofa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/10508345_1435090810096392_1946995565_n3-363x460.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-8056\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Original designs by Henry Mayo for Ghostbusters 2<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Henry Mayo (<\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Ted, Shrek, Jumanji, Dune<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">) was brought on as \u201cvisual designer\u201d to work with the creature crew at ILM.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> Henry is allowing me to use some of his drawings from the film for this blog.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Here you see some of Henry\u2019s illustrations showing the different expressions that we were aiming for:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">In the original <em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">Ghostbusters<\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">, Slimer was referred to as \u201cOnionhead\u201d in the script. It was usually a puppet that was controlled by an elaborate system of cables.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">There was an actor\/puppeteer (Mark Wilson) inside.<\/span><\/span><a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/G:\/Blog2%20final_RAY_Copy.doc#_ftn1\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">[1]<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Slimer in\u00a0<em>Ghostbusters 2<\/em> was an actor in a suit.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Where the body for original Slimer in\u00a0<em>Ghostbusters<\/em> was sculpted and cast as a solid piece, Slimer in\u00a0<em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">Ghostbusters 2<\/span><\/em> was approached as a fat suit. We constructed tubes out of spandex that were dyed and filled with weighted plastic pellets so that they would bounce and move with the actor.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Here is a <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">video<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> that shows an early film test with the fat suit:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><object width=\"450\" height=\"311\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allownetworking\" value=\"all\" \/><param name=\"wmode\" value=\"transparent\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/static.photobucket.com\/player.swf\" \/><param name=\"flashvars\" value=\"file=http%3A%2F%2Fvid1101.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fg433%2Frayjonez%2FSlimer-slimed2_mpeg2video_zpsbecd29d6.mp4&amp;title=\" \/><embed width=\"450\" height=\"311\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" src=\"http:\/\/static.photobucket.com\/player.swf\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allownetworking=\"all\" wmode=\"transparent\" flashvars=\"file=http%3A%2F%2Fvid1101.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fg433%2Frayjonez%2FSlimer-slimed2_mpeg2video_zpsbecd29d6.mp4&amp;title=\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Videos by William Forsche, with heartfelt thanks!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">We covered the fat suit with <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">methylcellulose (slime)<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> for a film test.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">After viewing the footage it was decided to give the body a rubbery surface for a more uniform appearance.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">There is a rather blurry line between what is called a puppet and what is referred to as an actor in a suit.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 I<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">f the actor moves independently it is referred to as an actor in a suit.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">In <em>Ghostbusters 2<\/em>, Slimer was played by Robin Shelby.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Most of the action was shot against a blue screen at ILM to be added to the principal photography in post-production.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The creature was shot so that the actor\u2019s legs didn\u2019t show<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">When Robin Shelby was cast in the role of Slimer she had to jump in immediately to start rehearsals the next day. Slimer had elaborate mechanics, which were controlled by puppeteers who manipulated the lips, eyes, cheeks and tongue.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The puppeteers worked closely with Robin as they designed the movement of the face. Then we would smear the actor\u2019s hands and arms with K-Y jelly to allow the glove arms to slide on. Robin would get a bandage applied to her nose to protect her face. Finally 2 or 3 people would support the head and gently guide it into place.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">I asked Robin what the greatest challenge was in playing Slimer. She said, <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u201c<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">I think the biggest challenge was being asked to portray a character that was already so loved from the first film, and not putting any additional pressure or stress on myself.\u00a0 I decided when we started rehearsing that I would focus on the task at hand, and try my best to give what was being asked of me at the time. I had my moments of \u201cOh, wow\u2026I\u2019m really being asked to help bring Slimer to life\u2026 really??\u00a0 I knew I had a job to do, so I tried to focus on the job and not the enormity of it.<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Creating and performing Slimer was a team effort. I asked Robin what she enjoyed most.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">She replied<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">, \u201c<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">I had so much fun playing with the whole team that was involved in making Slimer happen.\u00a0 They were such talented, amazing group of people that I was given the chance to collaborate with, and we all had to depend on each other to make this character happen.\u00a0 It was hard work, but we certainly didn\u2019t forget to have a blast while we were there.<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">There were some challenging days on set also.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">There was the scene where Slimer had to eat a sub sandwich.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">When Slimer put the sandwich in his mouth it would rub against Robin\u2019s face. Fortunately for us, Robin was a great sport. Having such a patient and professional actor to work made our job so much easier than it could have been.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">We did our best to lighten the costume and head as much as possible, but between the weighted fat rolls and mechanics in the head it was still very hot and heavy.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Robin says \u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Between the smell of onion and the sweat, I was sure a fun date!! \u00a0But, of course, I would do it all over again in a second.<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">We were working in Marin at ILM, but the principal photography was done in LA.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Slimer\u2019s scenes were shot against a blue screen and the footage was combined in post production.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The director, Ivan Reitman and actor, Bill Murray came to ILM to check on <\/span><strong><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">the progress of the creatures and to work with Robin and the puppeteers to choreograph Slimer\u2019s performance. According to Robin, getting to meet and work with Bill Murray was one of the high points of the experience. She says, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Bill Murray came in to check things out while we were shooting at ILM, and I went from actress working on creating a character to an awestruck young lady meeting an icon.\u00a0 He couldn\u2019t have been nicer to me, and I\u2019m so grateful I was able to meet and talk to him.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">An interesting side note is that although Slimer is all about eating, the actor in the suit was never able to eat.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">We watched Robin become slimmer by the day.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">In the next blog post I will show you some of the other creatures in <em>Ghostbusters<\/em> and\u00a0<em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">Ghostbusters 2<\/span><\/em> and introduce you to some of the artists who worked on it.
