MacNider Museum in Iowa receives grant to help preserve Bil Baird Puppet Collection

August 24, 2011 By Puppeteers of America

Bil Baird, a protege of Tony Sarg, is an icon of the American Puppetry scene.  Even years after his passing his legacy continues to live on.  Many will recognize the puppets in the image to the left.  Used in the “Goat Herder” song in the film “The Sound of Music” starring Julie Andrews.  Located in Mason City, Iowa – the MacNider Museum’s collection of Bil Baird’s puppets is the largest display of his work that can be scene.

Recently the museum was awarded a grant of $5,595 by the State Historical Society of Iowa, in order to better preserve and maintain the puppets.  “We are absolutely thrilled to have it,” said Edith Blanchard, Museum Director.  “The Baird puppets are an essential part of Mason City’s history and help us to promote our educational mission.”  “We have people who come from all over the world to see the puppets.”  For more information about the MacNider Museum, visit their website.
